Food Amount Units

In the NCC Food and Nutrient Database, a variety of units are available to quantify food amounts. For example, most food items may be quantified in terms of an array of volumetric (e.g., cups, tablespoons, teaspoons) and weight (e.g., grams, ounces, pounds) units. In addition, foods may be quantified by food specific units (e.g., pieces, slices). These food specific units extend to brand name products that may be packaged in a variety of sizes. For example, brand name candy bars in the database include food specific units such as ‘miniature’, ‘fun size’, and ‘king size’.
