New Food Request Processing

Supported clients may submit New Food Requests as part of the NDSR Annual Support Agreement. Check the following guidelines to help you determine whether you can resolve a missing food at your site or whether you should submit it to NCC as a New Food Request. Missing dietary supplements may be resolved at your site by creating DSAM User Products.

Guidelines for Resolving Missing Foods at Your Site
  1. Review the Data-entry Rules in Appendix 15 of the NDSR User Manual.
  2. Check New Food Backup Files released with the NCC Quarterly.
  3. Determine if the food is a brand product.
    • If it's not a brand product, check to see if the food is similar to a database entry. If it is similar, select the entry and record it as a data-entry rule.
    • If it's a brand product, obtain the nutrients on the product label from the study participant, grocery store, or manufacturers' website. Use the following tolerances to compare nutrient values.

Nutrient tolerances per 100 g product.
      calories+/- 85.00 kcal
      protein+/- 5.00 g
      total fat+/- 2.50 g
      total carbohydrate+/- 10.00 g
      sodium+/- 100.00 mg
New Food Criteria
  • A food that is not in the database and cannot be described using a generic database entry.
  • An existing product whose form has changed.
  • A homemade recipe, regional, or ethnic food that cannot be described using database entries.
  • A food from a national fast food restaurant that cannot be described using database entries.
  • A new national brand product. The category of the product in NDSR must include a brand listing.

To submit a New Food Request complete the New Food Request Form.

Resolutions will be returned by email as an NDSR backup file within approximately fifteen business days if nutrient and ingredient information is provided. Restore the backup file to NDSR and the New Food resolutions may be inserted into NDSR records.
